About this Course
The High Altitude Skills course is an additional component designed specifically for Nepal’s unique high-altitude mountain environment. Under the UIMLA Standard 2024, member countries may add additional skills to their curriculum according to their geographical and professional requirements, provided these additions do not affect the minimum UIMLA standard.
Nepal introduced High Altitude Skills to prepare Mountain Leaders for advanced expedition leadership, glacier travel, ice climbing, rope systems, rescue, and summit management, enabling them to safely lead guests in high passes and mountain environments above 6,000 meters.

- Plan and manage high-altitude expeditions and summit attempts safely and effectively.
- Demonstrate advanced mountaineering and ice-climbing techniques.
- Apply effective glacier travel, route-setting, and rope management techniques.
- Construct and use advanced climbing knots, snow anchors, and ice-screw systems.
- Demonstrate appropriate mountain rescue and self-rescue techniques in high-altitude environments.
- Select, inspect, and correctly use mountaineering and climbing equipment.
- Develop effective summit plans, including route, weather, team, equipment, and emergency considerations.
- Strengthen decision-making, risk management, and leadership skills required for operating in challenging high-altitude environments.
- Build the competence required to lead guests safely on high-altitude routes and mountain summits above 6,000 meters.
