The Nepal Mountain Leader Association (NMLA) is committed to developing highly skilled Mountain Leaders through a structured training and certification pathway that meets both national and international standards. The curriculum is approved by the Council for Technical Education and Vocational Training (CTEVT) and verified by the Union of International Mountain Leader Associations (UIMLA).

Entrance Requirements

To be eligible for the entrance examination, candidates must

• Be at least 18 years of age
• Be in excellent physical condition and overall fitness.
• Demonstrate good moral character and professional conduct.
• Have a minimum of three years of trekking guide experience.
• Provide verified records of trekking experience, mountaineering activities, and relevant certifications.

Entrance Interview

All applicants must attend an entrance interview conducted by NMLA. The interview evaluates the candidate’s:

• Trekking and mountaineering experience
• Knowledge of Nepal’s tourism industry
• Mountain safety awareness
• Motivation and communication skills

Training Pathway

Candidates must successfully complete the following training modules.

• Fundamental skill of Mountain Leadership
• Summer Skills
• Winter Skills
• First Aid Responder
• High Altitude Skills

After completing each course, candidates must pass both practical and theoretical assessments before progressing to the next training level.

Final Assessment

After successfully completing all required training, candidates undertake a five-day Final Assessment conducted by NMLA.

The assessment evaluates the candidate’s knowledge and competence in:

• Leadership and decision-making
• Navigation
• Summer and winter mountain skills
• First aid and casualty management
• High-altitude leadership
• Risk management and rescue techniques

Minimum Requirements for Certification

To qualify for the final certification stage, candidates must:

• Successfully complete all components of the Aspirant Leader Course
• Maintain and update their professional logbook with documented experience
• Gain additional field experience between training phases

Verification and Certification

Before certification, candidates attend the NMLA Board Verification and Certification Program.

During this session, candidates receive an orientation on:

• The history and structure of NMLA and UIMLA
• The role of the International Mountain Leader
• Professional ethics and code of conduct
• Rights, duties, and responsibilities of an International Mountain Leader

Upon successful completion, candidates are awarded their UIMLA badge and stickers, and the process for issuing their International Mountain Leader identification card is completed.

Through this comprehensive training and assessment system, NMLA ensures that every certified International Mountain Leader possesses the knowledge, technical competence, leadership, and professionalism required to guide safely in mountain environments according to internationally recognized UIMLA standards.
